Router: Consumer Router with Open Source firmware OpenWrt. Blocking ads/trackers and running Wireguard.
-
NAS: Raspberry based OpenMediaVault. Backup done over
ssh
withrsync
. -
Seedbox: Raspberry based running
rtorrent
intmux
. Media files managed/streamed in LAN by Jellyfin and Kodi (LibreELEC short for Libre Embedded Linux Entertainment Center). -
Desktop: On my MacBook Air (screen LG UltraFine 5K) I use exclusively FLOSS. The majority are commandline tools from Homebrew Core and some graphical classics like Thunderbird and LibreWolf (based on Firefox) - there are a few others.
-
Cloud: Amazon S3 for off-site backups (encrypted with
gpg
,s3cmd
). I use also Nextcloud (not yet selfhosted). -
Social Media: I have consciously decided not to make an account with any company that belongs to Google or Facebook. This includes WhatsApp. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get rid of my Apple and Microsoft accounts. But I am working on becoming less dependent on them.
-
Mobile: As few as apps as possible on iPhone. I use Signal, Slide (Reddit client) and Proton Mail (with custom domain) the most.
-
Watch: Brand new, playing at the moment. Good motivator to take the bus less, walk more. Apple promises (it is hard to verify) that health data will not leave the device.
-
TV: Apple Arcade (Apple TV) subscription for the kids. They lost interest in Nintendo Switch (Mario and other exclusive titles) after they got to know Apple TV games. My wife uses Netflix and blue TV (Swisscom) for legacy television. Xbox (very closed ecosystem) is not at all suitable for small children and is now in the basement.
-
IoT: Dusting and mopping robots from iRobot (Amazon). It is on my to-do list to replace these with an open product. The "Apple HomePod mini" was only interesting for a few weeks, now it is hardly used and collects dust.
