It might also be worth altering the way the handling of missing values works in the outputs from the cdms2 enabled interfaces.
These set elements that are NaN to the missing value then set the missing_value attribute to indicate this value. It seems that this can then not be transformed back to a masked array with the .asma() method call. It might be better to construct masked arrays and convert these to cdms2 variables. This leaves the value NaN in place but creates an appropriate mask which can then be used to get back a sensible masked array with .asma().
