I've tentatively added support for hex floats for both writer and parsers, although it does not support every use-case nor do we plan to due to logistical difficulties. However, can can support significant digit radix/exponent base combinations of the following types:

  • 4, 2
  • 8, 2
  • 16, 2
  • 32, 2
  • 16, 4

Furthermore, now any exponent digit radix is supported so far. The reason for not supporting other exponent base/radix combinations is due to how it makes shifting digits to/from the significant digits impossible, and then scientific notation can no longer be used, since we might need to shift more than 1 significant digit into the integer part just so it can be represented by the exponent base. In short, logistically, these are the only viable cases.
