Huh, thought I had proofed against stray references to the NSUserNotification API on older SDKs. However I'm no longer able to test against the 10.7 SDK (it was removed in XCode 5) and no doubt more backwards-incompatible changes will creep in, so I've bumped the minimum build version to 10.8 in the readme. This is now fixed in 12053d5.

Thanks, appreciate the clarification. Just as an FYI, see https://github.com/devernay/xcodelegacy regarding older SDKs (though you can get them manually, this is more convenient). Among other things, pulls the Mac OS X SDKs for 10.4u, 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7 out of old Xcode archives and installs them. I've used these to build custom wineskin engines (read: wine) which are compatible with 10.6.

I should note that despite requiring more recent SDKs to build, the Boxer binary is (or should be, and will be by release) still backwards-compatible with 10.6. I'm not really fussed about requiring 10.8/10.9 to build with, as it makes development a lot more convenient for me; less need for SDK-backwards-compatibility shims that way.
