This happens when the main audio_output in mpd.conf is not set up. The volume does not apply to streaming. Are you able to get sound to come out of the server at all? (try playing a track)

This is a good issue though. mpd reports the volume as -1 in this situation instead of [0-100] so groovebasin should disable the volume slider instead of showing it at 0.
