Generally, any published image/file is beyond Antville’s permission control.
This is
due to images and files being served as static files, ie. they are served
differently from
e.g. stories or polls.
Thus, any published image – even without tag – is out in the open and
potentially can
be found.
The problem with the described approach is that it breaks consistency with the
tags
section. As under the hood tags and galleries are treated the same, the code
would
need to be refactored extensively – which I would like to avoid, especially
as this is
exactly the opposite of what I try to achieve in code.
Nevertheless, the described issue is about people not being aware that images
uploaded to Antville are publicly accessible. Thus, I suggest we add this
information
to the image/file upload form.

I don't consider any published image/file being beyond Antville’s permission
control
a problem, not at all. Even if that weren't rooted deep in Helma and could be
changed
in a minute I would prefer it the way it is because that enables users to easily
insert images and files to comments on other blogs using the respective macros,
even
when the blog they uploaded the content to is set to closed.
I think that since their introduction a couple of years ago,
imagetopics/galleries
are flawed from the ground. As it is impossible to add comments to images, they
are
inferior to inserting image macros in stories or comments, and as the macro code
isn't displayed, galleries can hardly be used to sort images to be able to
easily
pick those that one wants to publish.
I mean: http://foo.antville.org/images/ displays all images, but when you have
stored
thousands and want to retrieve a certain one, you either have to find it in the
long
list or, in case you used galleries, right click the image to get its URL and
then
fumble around with the URL.
I would prefer tagged images to be displayed in a list like on
http://foo.antville.org/images/ - i.e.: as thumbnails, with delete- and
edit-link and
macro code. And instead of galleries for publicly displaying images: inserting
the
macro code in stories and comments.
Could that be changed by a modification of skin(s)?

Your suggestions also would break the tags/galleries conjunction.
And instead of digressing further from the issue’s actual subject I consider
to rethink
the whole tags/galleries and/or stories/images presentation one day (not for
1.2,
though).
I feel the problem you are describing is rooted deeper in how contents, esp.
images
have to be managed in Antville, generally.

Closing this issue as galleries have become more like slide shows with 1.5
