Remove packages from the repository and use NuGet package restore

Within my fork, I've activated nuget package restore but now I'm wondering how to remove the folder 'package'. I'm sure, this is due to my limited know-how regarding git. when I try

git ls-files --others -i --exclude-standard

within my gitbash, I get the following error:

fatal: pathspec './packages' did not match any files

Can you Point me to the right direction?

I'm not a huge fan of command line stuff neither 😄

For the experimental branch, I simply removed the packages folder, committed the changes, edited .gitignore to uncomment line 103 and committed the changes again.
