This has been resolved - I will also note that both files.wordpress.com and wp-content/uploads links should work. Only some sites have their image links being rewritten to wp-content/uploads right now.

• Tested on Simple – Could Not Replicate

Reopening, as I just had a user in a chat about this issue with their simple site.

In their case, the site is private, and images are served from the wp-content/uploads/ folder. Setting the site to the Coming Soon mode made the images to display.
