Thank you for the report @Robertght . What happens here is that clicking on a pattern to add it automatically hides the inserter and, when you re-open the inserter, it defaults to Blocks.

Would it make sense to rephrase this as something along the lines of "Inserter should remember which tab it was on (Blocks, Media, Patterns) when reopened after having closed it"?

Note: This is likely coming from core, let's open a matching issue in the core repo if needed.

That can be one way, yes. I think I forgot to mention how I would expect it to work and that is to be able to click again on the Patterns tab to see the main list. I think that should be the easiest workflow instead of closing the whole thing and opening it again.

Thank you for the additional details. I see what you mean but it does not seem particularly confusing to me so I do not have a strong opinion on this enhancement.

Did you check the Gutenberg repo to see if this is being discussed in core? Thanks again @Robertght.
