Website coding from scratch is a creative, multi-dimensional process. Not only do you work in a series of coding languages, but you're also working at the interface between text, image, and site. You must also plan and execute how to guide users through your content with intentional motions. Here, I've laid out a website I made from scratch for the Cenzer Lab at the University of Chicago.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are the backbone of youth opportunity and intelligence in Chicago. In collaboration with RDCEP at UChicago, I will be course-designing and teaching coding/STEM lessons to curious CPS high school students and teachers. This repository can act as an inspiration or case study for anyone who is looking to 'codify' their local public schools too.
Here I test how Jupyter Notebooks, Dash, GitHub, Binder, and/or Heroku can be used to deploy interactive tools/capabilities.
Climate change has led to more extreme temperatures and weather patterns, but the effect of these extreme changes has not been tested on Jadera haematoloma, the soapberry bug. Already a Florida insect affected by the human-introduction of a nonnative host plant called golden rain tree, the soapberry bug can also be subject to changes in temperature and relative humidity. In particular, I’m interested in how changes in temperature, relative humidity, and age affects the flight performance of soapberry bugs. As long-distance flyers (~14km in one bout and ~0.3 m/s an average speed), these insects can traverse between Florida’s mainland and islands, making it possible for gene flow to continue between the native host plant (found on the islands) and the nonnative host plant (found on the mainland). However, there could be migratory consequences for these insects if extreme temperatures and relative humidity induced by climate change stunts their flying capabilities. Here, I hope to test that hypothesis and display those results.
Flight mills are valuable machines for any entomologist interested in flight testing their bugs. The machine I built is inspired by Attisano et al. (2015), but I put my own 3D printing and laser cutting spin on it. For exact details please see my published paper on JoVE (doi: 10.3791/62171) or this preprint (https://dx.doi.org/10.17504/protocols.io.bteznjf6). If you’re more curious about seeing how my code and methods change in the future, keep checking this repository. This repository will have more exploratory flight mill code and methods (e.g. parallel processing, image-processing setup, etc.).
No one has attempted to conduct a metanalyses on the flight dispersal of species across orders of insects, including Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera. This project asks two questions: 1) how does flight dispersal (speed, distance, duration, etc.) vary across species and order, and 2) how do weight, sex, morphology, and age impact flight dispersal across species and order. Various methods that measure flight dispersal (flight mill, free flight, video recordings, autographs, etc.) will be considered. I hope to see this project and its questions evolve in the next coming months as countless papers will be read and analyzed.
In the summer of 2019, our team embarked on a 2-3 week long trip across the American West. We conducted research on the one of the strangest woody shrubs in the Sonoran Desert near the Mexico-United States border - the ocotillo. Known for its wand-like branches, red blooming flowers, and its inverted conical shape, Fouquieria splendens (F. spendens) is not just perplexing but also quite beautiful. In this repository, we have stashed our findings on this particularly strange plant and hope to share to others our analytical framework.

This repository is for the undergrads who I get to work with through the years. It serves as an inspiration/creative-work space for coding projects to introduce undergrads to and build collaboration.
Extreme climate events are predicted to increase in the future, which will have significant evolutionary consequences on insects. Here, I will conduct an independent project on the direct and indirect effects of extreme hot temperatures and extreme variable temperatures on the growth of Jadera haematoloma, the soapberry bug. This research will better explain possible drivers of changing soapberry bug phenology and/or morphology, and it will explore the factors that determine the sensitivity or resilience of soapberry bugs to climate extremes on the individual and population level.
An xml file is comprised of markup language whose tags we have defined using GATE developer. This repository serves as an archive of all xml files generated through GATE. It summarizes all information, meanings, or definitions we find notable in our scientific and historical texts.
