Did you use these kerl instructions, or did you find them elsewhere?

I used those instructions. They seemed to have done something, though I can't be sure yet because the Riak source tarball for 1.3.0 is broken.

Note that if you first installed erlang using macports, then using kerl, It's unclear which version of erlang you'd be compiling with. If you haven't already done it, first remove the macports install. If there is a problem with the tarball, mind opening an issue on the riak project? https://github.com/basho/riak/issues

I've filed that in the basho/riak issue tracker. (I've since gotten further by ignoring the tarball download instructions and finding the instructions for building from a github checkout; I'll file further issues with the build in the riak project.)
