Yes AFAIK the latest trunk version is actually necessary. It rather annoying. I am considering publishing another package on pypi called django-mptt-2 or something like that. What do you think?

I created a new pypi package named django-mptt-2 : http://pypi.python.org/pypi/django-mptt-2/0.3.0
I will maintain this package in the future so you can happily this one instead of the old one. Cheers.

Thanks a lot! I've send message to Jonathan Buchanan, maintainer of django-mptt 2 days ago, but he didn't answered yet.
I think that maintaining django-mptt-2 is least of two evils.
