OK, what you're hearing is garbage. There are to be expected a few spurious
replies in the noise due to the weak CRC used in Mode S transmissions. Why
are you tuned to 1091MHz? Turn your gain up to 35, leave the frequency at
the default 1090MHz, and use a good antenna with a clear view of the sky --
Mode S transmissions are strictly line-of-sight and using an antenna
indoors or without a clear view of the sky will not work.

Hey! Thanks for the quick reply, I suspected it was all bogus but I had to be sure... I have been trying some different frequencies, to test if the tuner had some kind of offset (in the waterfall plots, I could see activity that seemed like stronger Mode S transmissions nearby the 1090mhz...). I'm planning to make a better antenna for 1090Mhz and I'll report any progress, however I can't set the gain to 35, when I use --gain=35, it has no effect. However, I seem to be able to set the gain just up to 19 on this dongle, or lower. Is there a possible workaround? Oh, and thank you for your great work on this !

A quick update, after some more tests: I could not get any decoded messages so far. Even having planes flying in for landing right above me and the receiver (outdoors with a clearview in all directions) it didn't decode any information. I'm not sure if it's the antenna or the dongle, or something else, so I'm waiting on a new one with Elonics E4000 tuner to arrive and I'll test again just to be sure it's not the tuner. By the way, can you confirm if anyone has been sucessful with Fitipower FC0012 tuner?

I'm not sure that the Fitipower tuner locks at 1090MHz. There's a utility
called "rtl_test" which I haven't used but I believe it will tell you where
the holes in coverage are for your tuner.

I've recently found out that FC0012 actually can't do 1090mhz, and that explains everything! I'm getting the E4000 soon... Thanks for all the support bistromath
