I build with "make deb" or "make release_deb" on groovy with no such error. The releases tab here on github has a .deb However when i change compat to 10, it does fail. So something else needs to be changed to satisfy whatever all the rules are that define compat level 10.

feel installing software from non-"official" ppa's is a bad rabbit hole to go down security wise. I'd be happy to provide any testing I can help with
@Seltonu the built sources are exactly the same as the one on the cappelikan ppa even the same recepie, just published on a different ppa and there are other packages in the ppa

I have a goovy build in my ppa it is a daily build of the same mirror as the cappelikan ppa. (The ppa also contains other daily build packages like mangohud)
from mainline.
At the moment there is a different problem with grrovy builds.
I get the following warning:
Compatibility levels before 10 are deprecated (level 9 in use)
So the contents of debian/compat have to be changed to 10 or higher to continue working with future ubuntu versions.

getting the same issue, mainline is uninstallable on groovy (PopOS 20.10)
from mainline.
@Seltonu you get the error because the cappelican ppa does not build for groovy at the moment. If you need groovy or hirsute you can use this ppa until the cappelikan is updated to also build for groovy and hirsute. The maintainer of the cappelikan ppa is the only one who can update the build.

thanks for the pointer! I'll probably wait it out, as I feel installing software from non-"official" ppa's is a bad rabbit hole to go down security wise. I'd be happy to provide any testing I can help with

@bkw777 The error is produced by calling debuild. You can check this buildlog on launchpad of the latest mainline build. The error message seems to suggest that compatibility level 9 will be removed in a point in the future (probably the next LTS release).

There now is a groovy build in the cappelikan ppa, solving the issue.
The debian 10 compatibility may still be a problem, but that has its own issue.
@bkw777 Maybe this can be closed.
