1. can you be more specific here? start position relative to what, of what?
   2/3) these appear to be issues found in the plugin vim-startify.
2. unite requires vimproc to be installed (which needs to be compiled). did you do this step? i have it configured to auto-build, but only if VS2012 is installed
3. does changing the colorscheme to something else fix this?

looks like autocmd GUIEnter * simalt ~x does the trick for 1. committed with 457dc53.

and no, s is not mapped to anything...except for s/ which is used to use sane regex searching.
