we have 2 big dells apparently running identical XP--same service pack, same 
build number
and identical IE--8.0.6001.18702
Using the same query from CCH, one can display Mapper and one can't.
The one that can't throws the error I sent to you, namely,

Closing this issue --- nothing to do about IE8 and hardly anyone uses this now.
