+1 on that, I would love to have that feature!

There are a couple of options already for collecting books into ad hoc groupings. I'm not dismissing your suggestion, but if it is implemented we need to be clear about why a third way to track personal metadata is needed and what attributes it would require to fit that need.

Option 1 - shelves

...since things can only be on one shelf at a time.

Books can be on multiple shelves at the same time. The UI does not make this obvious however, so that is definitely something that could be improved.

Here's a book I have on two shelves simultaneously:

I could have it on 3 shelves by adding it to my "Real TBR" shelf from the homepage of the book:

Option 2 - lists

You can also create unlimited lists, which can be private, and add any books you like to any list you own. There is a drop-down on the right hand side of every book homepage where you can quickly add it to any of your lists. You could have one called "books I own":

I guess there's that but I guess I worded it wrong. Since I guess what I'm really wanting is a true tagging and categorization feature. Esp since lists get confusing(I've added some from others with similar/same names or have ones of my own that are named the same thing somehow) and shelves are one at a time.

Ok so basically private, arbitrary tags you can apply to any book/edition?
