This is because when you run the Camping server from the command line, a default database is assumed and the server will require ActiveRecord even though this example does not have any Model.
You have a couple options:
a) Install ActiveRecord - which you will probably will need as soon as you implement some model persistence
b) open bin/camping in an editor and comment out line 78 to prevent the defaulting of conf.database.
Now the camping server will no longer require ActiveRecord.
But you would have to remember to un-comment the line the day you start using ActiveRecord.
