@wallrj thanks for response, so even if the IP was public we wouldn't even be able to generate a certificate just for the IP? we still need a DNS at least with Let's Encrypt. Some of the above answers suggest this is doable with ZeroSSL

I don't think Let's Encrypt supports IP SAN.

The error message Failed to create Order: 400 urn:ietf:params:acme:error:unsupportedIdentifier: NewOrder request included invalid non-DNS type identifier: type "ip", value "10.2.0.46" is coming from the Let's Encrypt service.

And even if Let's Encrypt did support IP SAN, I don't think you'd be able to use a private IP address like 10.2.0.46 because LE would have no way of reaching it and verifying it.
