Yes indeed, I've just updated the MetadataServiceExamples.cls class with a method to demonstrate this. As always you can choose to monitor the response via Batch Apex or Visualforce apex:actionPoller.

thanks for the response. when i am trying to delete record types i am getting response saying that
"Cannot delete record type through API"
is there any other way to delete recordtypes through metadata api.

Yes I get this as well, i even ensured the record type was not active, yet the docs for this metadata type state that delete is possible.http://www.salesforce.com/us/developer/docs/api_meta/Content/meta_recordtype.htm. My only other thought is using the 'deploy' operation with a desctructiveChanges.xml. Though I suspect this will give the same. Its probably worth raising a Salesforce support call to confirm, but it looks like this is a documentation error, as the service clearly does not allow this. Its probably does to the amount of profile updating etc that would have to be done, even in the UI this is not that easy once a record type is in use.
