It sounds like you're asking for the set langmap feature of vim. This is not implemented in cgdb, but it's a pretty good idea.

The issue is that there are builtin functions for some keys that I have to change. As far as im aware these builtins cant be set to another key via the commandline or cgdb settings because they dont have identifiers to call? I may be misinformed but the pdf doesnt mention them?

Yeah, I'm pointing out that this is a feature in vim that doesn't exist in cgdb -- but should. Maybe @brasko can look at it when he has time, he's familiar with the key input stuff.
