Internet Lore suggested that decorating the partition boundaries with M would allow parted to round the address to an aligned value.

I wonder what would happen if we used BACKINGFILES_PARTITION_END_SPEC as the start address for the mutable partition.

I tried this and it seems to work, at least doesn't complain. Haven't inspected too much yet:
MUTABLE_PARTITION_START_SPEC="$BACKINGFILES_PARTITION_END_SPEC"
