Figured out that I am using the Old view. In this case the integration is not working and I am getting the exception above.
Integration is working fine using the New view.

Also trying this extension out with a view to purchasing the software, and it does not work either with our Jira instance (7.12) or even jira.atlassian.org.
Additionally this repo has a much older version of the code than is available in the Chrome store.
