Update: I discovered this issue was being caused by ecb advising the switch-to-buffer-other-window which returns nil in their case. Temporarily deactivating ecb and connecting solves the issue. I'll see if I can get it to work while ecb is activated. Otherwise the temporal solution helps to get a repl up while developing.

@johnbendi : I just patched it to return the buffer regardless of what switch-to-buffer-other-window does. Seems to fix for me, HTH
