No, Hangouts is not shutting down. Rather it would be upgraded to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.

I'm not sure whether separating a product into two different entities is considered as shutdown here.

@cTxplorer It can be named "Hangouts Classic", which is how the product lead referred to it. I mean, he literally said it would "result in the eventual shut down" for the product.

We also have other similar cases that already exist in the list.

• Dodgeball -> Google Latitude
• Google Talk -> Hangouts

For clarity's sake, I've created a pending tag to mark that we're waiting on further information in order for this to be resolved.

Google released an official statement:

In March 2017, we announced plans to evolve classic Hangouts to focus on two experiences that help bring teams together: Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Both Chat and Meet are available today for G Suite customers and will be made available for consumer users, too. We have not announced an official timeline for transitioning users from classic Hangouts to Chat and Meet. We are fully committed to supporting classic Hangouts users until everyone is successfully migrated to Chat and Meet.
