diox, you could implement this very easily with a Relationship post_save hook.

Yes, but I feel like it notification support should be built-in in the app. Many other apps include (optional, checking if it's in settings.INSTALLED_APPS in a try/except) notification support in the app, using post_save signals or not.

It's my feeling dependencies are generally to be avoided. When a newer/better notifications app comes out, or when the current one changes, and relationships is tightly coupled to a certain interface, it'll cause maintenance trouble. Implementing notification handling in a post_save hook seems to me the right way to do this. By all means, though, fork relationships and add notification support!
