I think this could be useful. We'll need to devise a way of embedding the metadata variable name in a regex with no (or at least minimal) backward incompatibility. For zero backward incompatibility, it might have to be in itself an invalid regex string (guaranteeing that it could not exist in a valid regex string).

It will be super useful especially with Kubernetes namespaces, where data from Kubernetes plugin is needed for rewrite.
