How to use verilator in the simulation?

You would run "make SIM=verilator".

However, verilator currently has a number of issues. First, they keep changing things about the simulator interface, so right now you can only use very specific versions of verilator with cocotb (seems to be 4.106). Additionally, there are a number of limitations in the verilator linter that are resulting in spurious linter errors that cannot be ignored (errors stemming from lines that are unreachable by parameter value). Some of these issues may be fixed in newer versions of verilator, but those versions don't work with cocotb right now, so there isn't much that can be done aside from waiting for verilator to stabilize so that cocotb can interface with it properly.
