It seems what I was missing was this line in the instructions:

The only required fields are “fromEmail” and “message”. Everything else is optional.

I set the message field to be the honeypot, since the email was initially intended to have just a subject line. Now I set the message to a hidden input with a default value, and everything is good!

I wonder if there should be a better error message in this case? It's worth a thought, but I don't know how many other people will follow in similar tracks.

If you're ever unsure what the errors are, you can try adding this (with Dev Mode enabled):

I didn't realize I didn't have dev mode on. Reading the manuals as I go... :)
