I started to have a look at this. Solving it would require having a lot of extra test cases in roads.mss file. I was thinking it might be useful to have a script generating all these tests and came up with https://gist.github.com/Phyks/6cf2e030f5d7442f36ae8070e2207357 so far.
Not sure this is very much better actually. Maybe an option would be to have a templating system on top of CartoCSS for this.
I think this deserves a bit more reflexion and I'm waiting a bit to continue working on this.

I think this was solved in the latest refactor of roads.mss. Feel free to reopen if this is not the case.
