I figured out how to do this:

As a bash function, you can put in .bashrc:

nesh() {
  local npm_global_root
  npm_global_root=$(npm root -g)
  node <(cat <<EOF
const nesh = require('$npm_global_root/nesh');

nesh.defaults.historyFile = process.env.NODE_NESH_HISTORY;

require('$npm_global_root/nesh/bin/nesh');
EOF
) "$@"
}

As a bash script named nesh, put in path before the original nesh executable:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

npm_global_root=$(npm root -g)
node <(cat <<EOF
const nesh = require('$npm_global_root/nesh');

nesh.defaults.historyFile = process.env.NODE_NESH_HISTORY;

require('$npm_global_root/nesh/bin/nesh');
EOF
) "$@"

The reason for using bash and not just node directly with #!/usr/bin/env node is because I need to require nesh which is usually in global modules. I can set NODE_PATH to make all global modules available, but that would also allow your nesh session to require global modules, which can be undesirable.
Instead, I find out the global path and expand it into the node script to only require nesh.

At the end, it does require('$npm_global_root/nesh/bin/nesh'), which starts the nesh session and allows using all the CLI options, you normally use.

export NODE_NESH_HISTORY=$PATH_TO_HISTORY_FILE to set where your history file will be saved.

from nesh.
