I'm happy to make changes to improve power management -- but I'm pretty out of my depth on what those changes might be. My own laptop is a W520, but my usage patterns don't really give the battery much of a workout. On the rare ocassions where I've needed to squeeze a few extra minutes out I've used powertop to manually tweak a few settings, with some moderate success. But with powertop I believe it's a pretty manual process.
Do you have any suggestions as to specific tools or settings I could safely be adding into the mix to improve things?

My hunch is that there isn't any cpu scaling going on, possibly. i suppose one thing that could be done is to go through top under unity and then compare that to top under xmonad, see what power config daemons are missing, etc.
