We're aware of some issues with our OGG support, as it's barely ever tested. The MKV support is much more mature, if that's an option for you..?
We definitely plan to take a look at this in the future and fix the remaining issues, but it's not very high on our priorities since hardly anyone makes use of the OGG support anymore these days.

Our use case for mistserver right now is to use it to host audio files really, though video files maybe in the future. I understand mistserver isn't really meant for just hosting audio files, and I'd preferably use mediagoblin or something, but unfortunately mediagoblin seems to have an issue building right now. By any chance could you recommend any other media hosting self hosted options that you may be aware of? The landscape for that kind of tool seems to be rather bare, as mediagoblin (as mentioned) is really the only one that supports audio files that is free and/or open source. The rest seem to be in the league of soundcloud, which we'd like to avoid if at all possible. Thanks for the response though, -Michael.

You can put audio-only inside MKV files just fine and use it like that! Should support practically all codecs, even mixed together for maximum support. (e.g. you can use a single MKV file containing Vorbis, AAC, WAV, FLAC, and MP3 - all at the same time; Mist will automatically pick the best option for the platform you're currently attempting to play back on, in that case.)

The file format you store the data in has nothing to do with the formats you stream through. As long as the codecs match you're good to go. 👍
Just to be clear: Mist is made for generic "media" serving. That can be video, audio or timed metadata, in any combination you can think of.

I've tried setting up mkv and even webm, and they work in chromium, but upon opening any of the three I've tried so far (ogg, mkv, webm) in firefox I get "No compatible player/source combo found.". Any suggestions? -Michael.
