The units of length are indeed undefined, you are free to interpret them as you like (metre, centimetre, inch etc.)
People very often add a layer of colliding primitive geoms alongside their non-colliding meshes (which are used for visualisation and inertial properties), since primitive collisions are faster to compute than mesh collisions.

I'm importing STL objects from Solidworks. When I bring in a hinge, for example, the mesh objects come in in perfect positions they were saved in from Solidworks. I look at the x, y, z for the center of mass for the bolt, the axis of the hinge, but when I set the joint to be at that x, y, z axis position it's not there.
