I think this is actually an issue with Gists themselves, not the tool – whenever you type a filename in the web interface, the language dropdown is replaced with the message "language detected by filename".

This issue bothers me as well. It would be nice to allow overriding the language of a gist, even in the web interface.

It's a shame that one has to uglyfy script names with ".sh" just to get syntax coloring in the web viewer...

I agree. Any news on this problem? Don't understand why Github don't allow us to bypass this, and choose the language we want.

+1 for allowing the user to manually set the language in the web interface. Inferring the language from the filename is great for a default behavior, but it usually butchers configuration files, include files, and many kinds of template files. Changing the filename in order to force the correct syntax coloring just solves one problem by creating another.

After the merge you can use -f foo.rb to override the filename completely.

Unfortunately the API doesn't let you specify a file-type independently of file-extension, so this will have to do for now.
