Interesting. I wonder why the shellescape breaks it. Could you send me an example set of options you have set, and the directory structure you are using. Something like the filename you want to find at one point in the tree, and the file you are editing? Also let me know which OS you are running.

Hopefully with all of that information I can fix the bug.

I have no specific ale settings set.
I have a .jshintrc file containing the following options:
{ "curly": true, "forin": true, "quotmark": "single", "trailing": true, "esnext": true, "maxlen": 120 }

This .jshintrc file is located in a specific directory, for the sake of argument, let's call this /home/foo/bar/.jshintrc
The file I'm editing is at the same level, e.g. /home/foo/bar/ale_me.js

I'm using debian stretch (testing)
