The after 5 bases thing didn't work too well, ended up with a ton of stop codons at the end of the genome, and not very interesting dna overall.

This, also has not panned out well. I think the random selection of genes is not working out well. I need to hardcode it a bit more. Like forcing genes to be 5 bases or something, and always inserting a gene if the other side is empty.

This is now moot since all genes are officially 5 bases now
