Stonesense needs quite a bit of graphics card memory for all the images. You might have to use lower resolution versions of them. That generally means commenting out the high resolution versions in some config files.

If you look into stonesense/terrain/index.txt (this is the default one):
#Track_Floors_128.xml
#Track_Ramps_128.xml
Track_Floors.xml
Track_Ramps.xml

The high resolution versions are commented out (# in front), while the normal ones aren't. Go through the files and make the changes.

Ok, I just got a better GPU, and it loads now. (GPU = ATI HD 4650)

But the majority of the displayed map in stonesense is white, while the real world is primarily grass, what's causing that ?
