Sorry, I should have been more specific.

I tried to el-get-install nxhtml on Emacs 23.2. It started to byte compile the files and then tossed me in the debugger. I'll dig a little deeper this evening to see if I can fix it.

Well it seems like emacs is confused and seeing (require 'nxhtml) it tries to load the recipe file, which is not valid Emacs Lisp code, but just Elisp data. It could mean it's time for the recipes to stop being *.el files.

Now that I think some more about it, why the hell your recipe path is into your load-path?

Aha, that was it.

I've been doing so much reorganizing of my Emacs configuration around el-get that I didn't realize I had this:

(if (fboundp 'normal-top-level-add-subdirs-to-load-path)
    (let* ((lisp-dir (expand-file-name "~/.emacs.d/"))
           (default-directory lisp-dir))
      (setq load-path (cons lisp-dir load-path))
      (normal-top-level-add-subdirs-to-load-path)))

which, of course, was adding all of the subdirectories to my load-path. I removed it and now nxhtml installs properly. Thanks for your insight!

Hehe, I'm glad it was that "easy" after all --- no patch nor bugfix for me to do :)
