I guess

git update-index --cacheinfo $MODE $(git hash-object -w $tmp) "$FILE"

is failing too. I can try to play around with it tomorrow but I figured you would have more insights. I'm not familiar with a lot of these commands, in particular git update-index.

This looks like it's simple to fix.

It appears that the BSD version of mktemp requires a template argument, whereas the GNU version offers a sensible default. Does it work if you include the very small change in 8bd8728?

Also…

git hash-object -w creates a new object in git's object database, without (yet) tying that object to a specific revision.

git update-index injects a change directly into the git staging area/index, while bypassing the working tree.

Yes, with

tmp=$(mktemp /tmp/wtf.XXXX) # BSD/OSX version of mktemp requires template

it seems to be working great. Will let you know if I run into any issues.
