Web driver promises are not Promises/A+ compliant. There are several closed issues about that.

I think we should add a prohibition on them directly just like we do with jQuery promises, since enough people see this problem in action. Will open a new issue for that.

I'm not sure what the difference is but they claim to be following commonJS promise/A and promise/B for their implementation. They seem to be working with the expect but not with the should syntax. Wrapping the webdriverjs promise in a Q promise makes it work.

Oh, I remember the details now. The problem is that these web driver promises come from a different code execution realm, where Object.prototype is different, and so adding a should property to the current realm's Object.prototype does not work.

I can imagine various hacky workarounds (e.g. trying to find the other realm's Object.prototype and installing the getter there...). Kind of out of scope for us, but then again it should probably be documented, and if an easy and somewhat-sane workaround is found, we can recommend it in the readme.
