Funeral on Discord reports that the operating temperature will not cause damage to the phone, however I believe there are still other concerns to consider:
- Phone feels hot to the touch
- The battery gets hot
- Temperatures over 45C can cause skin burns

With postmarketOS CE and newer pinephones you don't have to worry about thermals anymore. The added thermal pads to the mainboard and back cover mean that it only ever gets warm anymore.

It's been four years and it looks like my PinePhone is still working fine (most development is done on this device). Both the software and the battery itself has failsafe built in.
I'll be moving this to it's own discussion thread.
