I don't think it's a good idea for the following reasons:

1 - does not work on windows (i know, it's not a standard setup, but magmi is supposed to work under windows based servers like Wampp)
2 - The files in import dir are not supposed to stay there, (it's a "to import" folder) but the /media/catalog one, is the final one holding the real item associated images.

So your linking proposal may work in your particular setup, but is far from being a common magento practice. Maybe i could (low priority) add a parameter to the plugin that would allow to change "image file import" method (linking or copy). But copy will always work where linking is a very special case.

You're right. It's a particular setup, since I have a very huge number of products, and the image files are changed very frequently. To reduce the disk space, I try to link the files, and take the ./media/import as the static type folder.
