@TonyB9000 : this looks like a potential bug. I was trying to reproduce the steps you outlined, but I don't have permission to read the files:

ls  -l /p/user_pub/e3sm/archive/1_0/20180316.DECKv1b_A1.ne30_oEC.edison
ls: cannot access /p/user_pub/e3sm/archive/1_0/20180316.DECKv1b_A1.ne30_oEC.edison: Permission denied

Can you change the permissions so I can try to reproduce and understand the issue? Thanks.
