Una solución temporal:
Considero que para grDevices::contourLines() es ambiguo para qué lado cerrar el contorno con nivel igual al promedio y pareciera ser que resuelve la ambigüedad arbitrariamente cerrando para el lado negativo. Trabajando bajo esa suposición, en caso de que mean.z == mean.level, considero que el lado negativo va a estar cerrado y lo cierro por el positivo.
