Made some good progress on this last night, here are some screenshots of the styling I've come up with

I've been using this contrast accessibility tool to updated the code block styles while picking colors for the highlights. Some of the contrasts are a little lacking, but wanted to keep the differentiation between things. Here is where I am at:
