The problem is correlating between layers as they appear in the response object and layers as they appear in the map layer list. Before, I was trying to do this by mapping the title of the former with the name of the latter. This works initially, but when the user renames a layer through ArcGIS.com, the name property doesn't get updated. So, now I'm using the ID, but you have to be careful, because the response object layer has IDs in two different places in the property hierarchy...It may well be that there's no need to use the response object at all (although I believe it's the only way to get the updated title). At this point, I consider it kind of a legacy thing. But I'm afraid to rip it out.
