Question: Why doesn't esy.build accept space separated string?

We accept string | Array<string> | Array<Array<string>> as build in package.json.

• string — means execute single command
• Array<string> — execute multiple commands, each command being a string (commands with args) but you have to make sure you quote args right in package.json
• Array<Array<string>> — execute multiple commands, each command being an array where command name and args are separate items in an array. Esy takes care of quoting then.

So to address your example:

"esy": {
    "build": [
      [
        "make build",
      ],
    ...

means execute a command make build with no args. While ["make", "build"] means execute a command make with build as the single arg.
