Notifications should work out of the box. Make sure you have your events displayed in the calendar and notifications enabled in the options.

I also have problems with notifications. They do not always work reliable even though I gave it priority permission. Also the date doesnt change overnight to todays date in the widget and calendar itself. I have to press actively on the 'todaybutton'. Huawei g8 android 6.0.1
