Alternatively can you try navigating to engine directory and run npm install there.

You can find engine directory used by control center as shown below:

I let it run for 2 hours, but I'll try running npm install in the directory

I tried twice to npm install, left it running for a total of 5 hours..

This seems like something is wrong with your npm configuration and its ability to install packages. Can you check if some proxy thing is creating some issue or reach out on npm github/support.
